Abstract

The dominance of coal-based energy use in Indonesia contributes significantly to environmental The decreasing availability of clean water due to population growth and environmental pollution has driven the development of more efficient water treatment technologies. One promising technology is the use of polymer-based membranes. This study aims to analyze the morphological characteristics, mechanical properties, and filtration performance of Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF)-based membranes modified with the addition of Silver Nitrate (AgNO₃) as an antibacterial agent. The membrane printing process was carried out in the form of flat sheets using a DC electric field of 25 kV for 3 seconds. The membrane composition consisted of 30 wt% PVDF and varying concentrations of AgNO₃ at 1 wt%, 1.5 wt%, and 2 wt%, using DMF as the solvent. The membrane characteristics were evaluated through tensile testing (ASTM D638 Type IV), Clean Water Permeability (CWP), and morphological analysis using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The results of the study showed that membranes with the addition of 1 wt% AgNO₃ had the best performance with a tensile strength of 4.194 MPa and the highest flux value of 25.06 L•m⁻²•h⁻¹•bar⁻¹. Meanwhile, increasing the AgNO₃ concentration to 2 wt% caused particle agglomeration, which reduced mechanical strength and flux efficiency. A smooth and uniform pore structure without agglomeration was observed at a concentration of 1 wt%, indicating a direct relationship between pore morphology, mechanical strength, and filtration performance. Thus, the combination of PVDF and 1 wt% AgNO₃, along with the application of an electric field, was proven effective in enhancing membrane quality for clean water treatment applications.
