Abstract

The estuary is a transitional zone between rivers and the sea that is highly susceptible to sediment deposition processes. The Banyuasin River Estuary has experienced an increase in sedimentation, which has the potential to cause shoreline changes and waterway shallowing. This study aims to analyze the sediment characteristics, sedimentation rate, and total organic carbon deposition in the Banyuasin River Estuary. The research was conducted in October 2024 using sediment sampling methods with sediment traps at six stations and an Ekman Grab at ten stations over a 14-day period. Data analysis included current velocity measurement, tidal type determination, grain size distribution, sorting, skewness, kurtosis, sedimentation rate, and organic carbon content. The results showed that the dominant sediment types were sandy loam and loamy sand, with sorting conditions classified as very poorly sorted and skewness tending toward strongly positive. The tidal type in this area was identified as a mixed tide prevailing diurnal, with current velocities ranging from 0.034 to 0.144 m/s. The highest sedimentation rate was recorded at station 2 (T2) at 1.3197 g/cm²/day, while the lowest occurred at station 6 (T1) at 0.0014 g/cm²/day. Total organic carbon content ranged from 17.79–36.93%, with the highest values corresponding to higher sedimentation rates. These findings indicate that sediment characteristics and hydrodynamic dynamics significantly influence sedimentation processes and organic carbon accumulation in the estuarine area.
