Abstract

Background: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a complex and multifactorial inflammatory condition of the nasal and paranasal sinus mucosa, influenced by various factors such as laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR). Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) is a commonly performed surgical procedure aimed at reducing inflammation and improving sinus drainage in CRS patients. Several studies have concluded that LPR may exacerbate CRS; however, research investigating the correlation between LPR and post-FESS outcomes in CRS patients remains limited. This study aims to evaluate the correlation between the degree of LPR and the quality of life in CRS patients after undergoing FESS at Mohammad Hoesin Hospital. Methods: An analytical observational study with a cross sectional design was conducted at Mohammad Hoesin Hospital from Mei to July 2025. A total of 43 patients with chronic rhinosinusitis who had undergone FESS and met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were included in the study. Results: Quality of life distribution based on the SNOT-22 score showed that the majority of patients were in the mild category (51,2%), with a mean score of 23,65 ± 19,77. Evaluation of laryngopharyngeal reflux revealed 25,6% of patients were positive based on the Reflux Symptom Index (RSI) and 23,3% based on the Reflux Finding Score (RFS). There was a strong positive correlation between RSI (p<0.001; r=0,632) and RFS (p<0,001; r=0,581) with SNOT-22 scores. According to the scatter plot analysis, each 1-point increase in RSI increases the SNOT-22 score by 2.37 points, and each 1-point increase in RSF increases the SNOT-22 score by 1.74 points. Conclusion: There is a significant correlation between the quality of life of CRS patients and LPR after FESS surgery, as measured by the Sino-Nasal Outcome Test-22 (SNOT-22). The findings indicate that a higher of laryngopharyngeal reflux is associated with a poorer post-FESS quality of life.
