Abstract

Electrical energy is basic necessity for the progress of a nation. So it needed an installation of efficient power plants. Various kinds of power plants has been widely made ranging from gas turbines, steam turbines, water turbines, waterwheel and a solar cell with a variety of benefits and advantages. The region of Indonesia, which generally have the source and flow of water in some areas is supported by the geographical condition of the mountains that may cause water flow has a different heighl, providing opportunities for the utilization of water energy generation. The potential energy of water power plant in Indonesia is appreciable, for hydropower potential reach 75,000 MW and recently exploited 5,700 MW while for mini and micro-hydro power plants potential reaches 460 MW with its utilization reaches 228 MW. That the water energy potency is very much at Indonesia, it needs to be examined on a model turbine which utilizes water flow have different elevations as the driving force of the turbine. Pelton turbine is an impulse type of turbine which has not been much developed in a particular scale rural hydropower potential with high potential for considerable water fail. A Pelton turbine consists of a set of specially shaped buckets mounted on a periphery of a circular disc. It is tumed by forced jets of water which are discharged from one or more nozzles and impinge on the buckets. The resulting impulse spins the turbine runner, imparting energy to the turbine shaft. The buckets are split into two halves so that the Central area does not act as a dead spot incapable of deflecting water away from the oncoming jet. Research done by experimental methods that make changes to the load and discharge flow to know the performance of the turbine. The primary research data are obtained from the results of testing against the quantities obtained such as: discharge flow, head, rpm, and load. Secondary research data obtained from a variety of literature related to the issue discussed, where the data was later used as a comparison against the test results obtained. Research was done by using water turbine test facility which has existed at the Department of mechanical engineering, Faculty of engineering, Sriwijaya University. Pelton turbines that used at in this study consists of several tools used such as pelton turbines, pipes, valves, reservoirs, pumps, turbine and the turbine House. The research process begins by placing a measuring instrument such as manometers, u-pipe pressure gauge, strain gauge and tachometer to measure turbines speed. Testing is done by changing the aperture spear valve as much as 7 variations with each taken 20 data loading. From research conducted, obtained a value of maximum power and efficiency of pelton turbine which examined is 45.08% at 0,167 1/s stream discharge, head 27.23 m with turbine power 20,05W. From data acquired on testing it can be concluded that the discharge flow and load affects the performance and efficiency of pelton turbine. Pelton turbine can be operated with small discharge, compared with other types of impulse turbine. Keywords : Pelton turbine, load, head, flowrate, efficiency
