Abstract

The purpose of this research is to compare the mechanical properties and microstructure of the medium carbon Steel, with heat treatment or without heat treatment. The heat treatments used are quench and quench-temper. The results of this research are the highest impact energy is on quenching 60 minutes - temper material which the increased is 16,39 % compare to non-heat treatment material, while the lowest impact energy is on quenched 30 minutes and its decreased 58,55 % compare to non-heat treatment. For the hardness value, the highest one is on quenched 30 minutes material which is increased to 30,69 % compare to raw material. Whereas the highest value of the tensile strength is on quenched 30 minutes, which is increased to 39.84 % compare to raw material and for the highest fracture value i s also on quenched 30 minutes, and its increased to 32,01 % compare to non-heat treatment material, and the highest value of strain is on quenched 60 minutes - temper material, its increased to 6,42 % compare to the non-heat treatment. Then almost every materials or specimens on this research have ferrite and pearlite as its microstructure as well.
