Abstract

Based on the riskesdas data in Indonesia in 2018, nutritional problems among adolescents were found, specifically malnutrition (8.7%), and overweight (16%), whereas in Ogan Komering Ilir (OKI) district, the prevalence of malnutrition was 8.92%, and overweight was 16.58%, which is higher than the national prevalence figures. Eating habits (breakfast habits, bringing packed meals, and junk food consumption habits) among adolescents affect their nutritional status. This study aims to determine the relationship between eating habits and nutritional status among early adolescents at SD Negeri 1 Bumi Harapan, Teluk Gelam District, using quantitative data with a descriptive analytical design using a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 123 respondents in grades IV-VI aged 10-13 years, using total sampling technique. Most respondents were 12 years old (38.2%), in the sixth grade (41.5%), female (50.4%), with the majority having an allowance of Rp.10,000 (51.2%), and most parents' last education level being high school/vocational school for fathers (31.7%) and mothers (35%), nearly all fathers working as farmers (94.3%) and mothers as housewives (84.6%), family income below the regional minimum wage (71.6%), abnormal nutritional status (82.1%), poor eating habits (89.4%), and students showing good breakfast habits (91.1%). Respondents rarely brought packed lunches (87%), and junk food consumption habits were considered frequent (78.9%). The bivariate analysis using Fisher's exact test in this study shows a significant relationship between eating habits (p-value = 0.000), bringing packed lunches (p-value = 0.001), and junk food consumption habits (p-value = 0.001) with nutritional status. However, there is no significant relationship between breakfast habits and nutritional status (p-value = 0.211). In early adolescents at SD Negeri 1 Bumi Harapan, Teluk Gelam District. Therefore, there is a need for supervision of the availability of healthy food in the school environment and its surroundings to minimize the consumption of junk food.
