Abstract

Food selection behavior plays an important role in maintaining athletes' health and performance. A balanced nutritional intake is essential to support strength, endurance, and recovery. However, many athletes still do not consider nutritional aspects when choosing food, which can lead to decreased physical fitness. This study aims to determine the relationship between nutrition knowledge and attitudes with balanced food selection behavior among karate athletes in Palembang. This research is a quantitative observational study with a cross-sectional approach, involving 48 athletes aged 18–25 years selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a valid and reliable questionnaire and analyzed using the chi-square test and Fisher’s exact test. The results showed no significant relationship between nutrition knowledge and food selection behavior (p=0.488), but there was a significant relationship between attitude and behavior (p<0.05). It can be concluded that a positive attitude has a stronger influence on healthy eating behavior. Therefore, it is recommended that sports organizations collaborate with nutritionists and provide education that not only increases knowledge but also fosters positive attitudes to support proper dietary patterns and optimize athletes' performance.
