Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effects of Provincial Minimum Wage (PMW), educational attainment, and population density on income disparity, as well as to examine the validity of the Kuznets hypothesis in the Southern Sumatra region, which includes the provinces of South Sumatra, Lampung, Jambi, Bengkulu, and Bangka Belitung Islands. This research employs secondary data analyzed using a panel data regression approach. The findings reveal that PMW and education level have a negative and significant effect on income disparity, indicating that increases in minimum wage and educational attainment can reduce income inequality. Meanwhile, population density has a positive effect on income disparity, suggesting that high population concentration tends to widen the income gap. Furthermore, the results support the validity of the Kuznets hypothesis, showing that at a certain stage, economic growth can reduce income disparity. These findings imply that policies promoting wage increases, improved education quality, and equitable population distribution are crucial in sustainably reducing income disparity across the Sumbagsel region.
