Abstract
This study aims to examine the forms of cultural adaptation that occur among ethnic groups living in G2 Dwijaya Village, Tugumulyo Subdistrict, Musi Rawas Regency. This research employs a qualitative approach with an ethnographic method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving 16 informants. The results indicate that adaptation emerges through intensive and continuous social interaction, both in formal and informal contexts. This process is reflected in various aspects of daily life, such as language use, food, traditional ceremonies, clothing styles, and interethnic marriages. Social relations among ethnic groups—such as Javanese, Sundanese, and local Malay—tend to be harmonious and cooperative. Several factors that support the adaptation process include openness, tolerance, communication, and local values such as mutual cooperation (gotong royong) and consensus-building (musyawarah). This study refers to Young Yun Kim’s theory of cultural adaptation, which explains that adaptation occurs through a dynamic process of stress, adjustment, and growth in cross-cultural environments. The findings show that multicultural communities can build a shared and inclusive identity without losing their respective cultural identities.
