Abstract
The objective of this research is to know the pattern of voting behavior in the1999 election and the rule of local elite in political mobilization. This research took place in Lekkong, Padang Malua and Riso. These kampung are muslim community and part of Pinang Village in South Sulawesi. The type of research is descriptive-qualitative. The data were collected by observation and interview to be done by the chosen informans, The data were analized by qualitative method too, and then be interpretated by formal logic and verstehen method. The results showed that the 1999 election of reformation era, parties got multyvariety supporters, but Golkar Party was still the winner. The Golkar Party got 61 percent suppoters, while PKB got about 9 percent, PAN got 18 percent, PPP got 7 percent and PBB got 3 percent. The voting behavior is based on the aliran politics and the patron-client relationship. The santri community voted a party based on the aliran politics, especially for Muhammadiyah who support PAN, and the other voters followed their patron, who voted Golkar Party or PKB. The patron-client relationship variable more dominant then the aliran politics. But in the last election (1999) could be indicated as a rise of aliran politics for santri community. The relationship patron-client was being in the semi-urban and abangan communities. The internal conflict of local elite also influenced the varian of voting, because they had political interest or political afiliation. A numbers of voter be rationality to vote, especially for adult where they had not an Islamic education backround. But some of them participated in the 1999 election, not only as voters, but also as candidates. Key Words: voting behavior — patron client — aliran politik —local elite-- muslim community
