Abstract

Starfruit leaves (Averhoa bilimbi L.) contain tannin compounds. Simplisia of starfruit leaf (Averhoa bilimbi L.) was extracted by maceration method using 70% ethanol solvent. Starfruit leaf extract is used as a basic ingredient for mouthwash formula with a concentration variation of 10%, 20% and 30%. The mouthwash produced was tested organoleptically, pH, specific gravity, viscosity and antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans which then analyzed the data using the SPSS application. The results of the analysis show that variations in the concentration of ethanol extracts of starfruit leaf (Averrhoa bilimbi L.) affect the physical characteristics of mouthwash preparations. Inhibition zone diameters are measured using the ImageJ® application. the higher the concentration of the extract used, the greater the antibacterial activity. The inhibition zone caused by mouthwash preparations with variations in the concentration of extracts of 10%, 20% and 30% respectively amounted to 2,746 ± 0.386 mm, 5,039 ± 0.471 mm and 7,920 ± 0.792 mm. Mouthwash with ethanol extract of starfruit leaves 30% has the best antibacterial activity with a clear zone diameter of 7.920 ± 0.792 mm.
