Abstract
In this study, MnFe2O4/activated carbon magnetic composite based on durian shell with mass ratio of 1:3 was synthesized using a simple chemical coprecipitation procedure in order to adsorb methyl red dye. The quality of activated carbon was measured using water and ash content analysis. Physicochemical analysis of the composite was carried out through Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Scanning Electron Micrograph and Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) surface area, and pH Point Zero Charge (pHpzc). The impact of various adsorption parameters such as adsorbent dose, contact time, temperature and methyl red solution concentration were systematically investigated to evaluate the optimum operating conditions. The water and ash content values were 14.179 and 5.618 % w/w, respectively. The FT-IR result of MnFe2O4/activated carbon composite showed a couple additional groups of Fe-O and Mn-O which did not exist on activated carbon FT-IR spectra. It was clearly seen on the SEM result that the MnFe2O4/activated carbon composites were full of cavities with some of MnFe2O4 oxides were still trapped at the surface of composites. Based on EDS result, the existing elements of MnFe2O4/activated carbon composites were C, O, Cl, Fe, and Mn. The existence of Mn and Fe elements were an evidence that composition between activated carbon and MnFe2O4 truly happened. The BET surface areas obtained by SAA were in the range of 143.992 m2 g–1. The pHpzc analysis of MnFe2O4/activated carbon composite showed the value of 5. The optimum condition was obtained with composite weight of 0.05 gram, contact time of 100 minutes, temperature of 50 °C, and methyl red consentration of 70 mg/L, with the adsorption capacity of 29.869 mg/g. The adsorption isoterm was based on Langmuir isoterm with the value of R2 0.995 and adsorption energy of 7.586 KJ/mol.
