Abstract
Fabrication and characterization of electrodes Pt-Ru/C and its application directly in direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) has been done. The electrodes are made by using a mixture of Platinum and ruthenium catalyst that is distributed to gas diffusion layer (GDL) using the method of impregnation. Mix catalyst contains a variation of the percentage of 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% Pt’s loading against Ru with total of 2.5 mg/cm2. The electrodes are characterized using XRD, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrical conductivity. XRD analysis results showed carbon at position 2 = 20-30o, Peak of Platinum is at position 2 = 24.7-25.0o and 46-47o. XRD analysis to GDL with Catalyst mixture of Platinum and ruthenium, the peak of Platinum slightly widened due to the presence of the distribution of Ru. The addition of Ru combined with Pt causes a reduction in the intensity of Pt. Voltammogram Curves resulting from Cyclic Voltammetry test (CV) indicates the presence of the reversible reaction, shown with the formation of the anodic peak (upper curve) and cathodic peak (bottom curve). This shows that there has been a redox reaction in the process of fusion between Pt and Ru. The catalytic activity of the electrode data calculated from the results of CV by using the Electrochemial Surface Area (ECSA) method. The highest catalytic activity at 20% of Pt electrode 2.36E-04 cm2/g and the lowest at 80% of Pt electrode 4.42E-05 cm2/gr. in electrical conductivity test using a digital multimeter with auto DC power supply as well as digital, obtained the highest value at 0% of Pt 0.001067 S.cm-1 and the lowest value at 20% of Pt 0.000827 S.cm-1. Applications made on stack DMFC with 5% methanol fuel and obtained data OCV (open circuit voltage) as well as the value of the current and voltage when given the resistor varies. The highest value of the OCV on 40% of Pt of 387 mV and the lowest at 0% Pt of 11 mV. On granting a resistor, a straight comparison between the values obtained by administering the resistor with voltage produced. The greater the resistor given the value of the voltage will progressively decrease.
