Abstract
Introduction: The percentage of exclusively breastfed infants in Indonesia is low at only 15,3%, whereas breast milk is the best food for babies. Exclusive breastfeeding can increase intelligence, especially in mathematics, language, reading, writing, and spelling because breast milk contains DHA and AA that are required for brain development. An intelligent child is one of the determinants of academic achievement at school. This study aimed to find out the relationship between history of exclusive breastfeeding and academic achievement of Elementary School students. Method: This study was an observational analytic study with cross-sectional design. It was conducted in October 2013-January 2014. Samples were taken by simple random sampling method. Samples of this study amounted 100 children. Data was obtained from the primary data based on questionnaires and interviews and the secondary data based on examination scores and it was processed by chi-square test. Results: Subjects consisted of 50 males dan 50 females. Children who had history of exclusive breastfeeding amount 19 (19%). Among 25 children who had good academic achievement in Mathematics, 7 children (28%) had history of exclusive breasfeeding and 18 children (72%) were not exclusively breastfed. Among 15 children who had good academic achievement in Bahasa, 4 children (26,7%) had history of exclusive breasfeeding and 11 children (73,3%) were not exclusively breastfed. In English, among 6 children who had good academic achievement, 2 children (33,3%) had history of exclusive breastfeeding and 4 children (66,7%) were not exclusively breastfed. Conclusion: There was no correlation between history of exclusive breastfeeding and academic achievement of 3rd to 4th grade students in 43 Elementary School Palembang (α>0,05).
