Abstract

Regional Germplasm Preservation with an area of 448 ha and as the habitat of the Sumatran elephant with different vegetation in them. Protected areas are set out in Spatial company of Industrial Forest Park are consist of Regional Germplasm Preservation, Wildlife Conservation Area, Sempa and Rivers Protected Areas, Buffer Zone area, Catchments, and protected area defined in the layout of the company, are part of the plantation areas that serve to protect biodiversity and ecological functions within the concession area. To increase the population of endangered species, there needs to be an effort to enrichment in the Germplasm Preservation area. Enrichment of endangered species can also be done in other areas such as water catchment areas, local and other protected areas along the appropriate habitat. The purpose of this research is to determine the density, frequency, dominance and diversity of vegetation types in the Regional Germplasm Preservation PT. Bumi Mekar Hijau and the role of the areas as a habitat for Sumatra elephants. The results from this research is expected to be the basic data and scientific information, especially about vegetation analysis at the Regional Germplasm Preservation PT. Bumi Mekar Hijau which is Sumatra elephants habitat, and to minimize the conflicts between human and elephants around the Regional Germplasm Preservation, and to be additional information for Sumatran elephant conservation strategy and action plan. This research was conducted in January to February 2015. Data collection was conducted at the Regional Germplasm Preservation PT. Bumi Mekar Hijau, Ogan Ilir South Sumatra. Identification of plant species that are not yet to be known was conducted at the Laboratory of Ecology, Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Sriwijaya. The method that was used is Purposive sampling method in each location. Data vegetation start from cover growth rate seedlings, saplings, poles, and tree transect method be obtained through terraced path. In each transect was made a plot size of 20x20 m for trees, 10x10 m for poles, 5x5 m for saplings, 2x2 m for seedlings/undergrowth. The Results of this research is, at Regional Germplasm Preservation was found 40 species and were classified into 26 families. At the level of the collected 12 species of trees were classified into 9 families. At the level of the collected pole 13 species were classified into 11 families. At the level of the collected 16 species of saplings were classified into 14 families. While the rate of seedling/herbaceous, the collected 36 species were classified into 26 families. The index of species diversity from the over all level of growth in the Treasury Office, with values ranging between 2.10-2.97. KPPN is also known as Sumatran elephant range areas. That is shown from several elephants footsteps that was found in KPPN areas . The conclusion of this research is that was found 26 family with 40 species of vegetation, and species of Diospyros macrophylla is known as the dominant vegetation at a rate of trees, poles, and stakes, while the rate of seedling/undergrowth dominated by Blechnum spicant. Diversity of species of vegetation in forests classified as intermediate with the index of species diversity range (H’) between 2-29. KPPN forest is also known as the Sumatran elephant range areas. Suggestions from the research that has been conducted is that was found a species as a Sumatran elephant feed, therefore it is necessary to protect the vegetation which are natural food source for Sumatran elephants, and continuous observation needs to be done in the area of Germplasm Preservation Areas, to be able to see the structure and vegetation composition and diversity of plant communities that was are habitat for Sumatran elephants, as well as the necessary research to determine the carrying capacity of the habitat for Sumatran elephants in the preservation area Germplasm and other protected areas in concession company.
