Abstract
Over the past decade, anti-malarial drug resistance has rapidly become a major public health problem in the South East Asia region including South Sumatra. Treatment failures to the first and second lines antimalarial drugs such as chloroquine and combination of sulfadoxinepyrimethamine have increased in the South Sumatera Province, Indonesia. A molecular epidemiologic study was conducted to determine the frequency distribution of mutant alleles of the genes associated with the resistance among the isolates of Plasmodium falciparum from this area. Analyses using a polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism showed that nearly all of the 6 samples carried wid type alleles in genes associated with sulfa drugs resistance P. falciparum dihydropteroate synthase (dhps) gene Ala437 (100%).
