Abstract
THE EFFECT OF SUPPORTIVE THERAPY TO CHANGES THE BURDEN OF FAMILIES IN CARING FOR CHILDREN WITH MENTAL RETARDATION Mental retardation as children with special needs have the disorder in intellectual functioning and social adaptation capabilities are significantly below the average since they were children (Durand & Barlow, 2006). Impaired mental retardation in children can lead to psychological problems for the child and the family who cared for him and it makes the burden to family.One way to reduce the burden on families who have children with mental retardation is a team approach in the form of support for family members lainnya.Terapi iet group called the Supportive . That goal is to strengthen the supportive therapy of empathy and the ability to use adaptive coping for families tersebut.Jenis quantitative research is a quasi experimental pre-post test.Jumlah respondents in the study were 56 to 28 people in the intervention group and 28 people in the group research kontrol.It was found that differences in family burden after the mplementation of supportive group therapy between the intervention group and control group. Recommendations that supportive therapy may be an independent family counseling to be held at the Extraordinary School. Key point : Supportive, therapy, children,mental retardation
