Abstract
This study aimed to find out: (1) whether or not there was a significant difference in students’ descriptive paragraph writing achievement before and after they were taught by using Natural Approach, and (2) whether or not there was a significant difference in students’ descriptive paragraph writing achievement between the students who were taught by using Natural Approach and those who were not. The sample of this study was 50 students of seventh grade students of SMP Santo Yosef Belinyu which were chosen by using total population sampling technique from 50 total populations. This study applied the Quasi-experimental design that divided students into two groups (experimental and control). In collecting the data, each group was given the writing test twice as a pre-test and a post-test. In this study, two raters did the scoring of the students’ pretest and posttest based on the writing rubric provided by the writer. The data were analyzed by using paired sample and independent sample t-test through SPSS version 22. The result of this study showed: (1) there was a significant difference in students’ descriptive paragraph writing achievement before and after they were taught by using Natural Approach (mean difference of post-test and pre-test was 3.660 and the significance value was 0.000 (p-value<0.05)), and (2) there was a significant difference in students’ descriptive paragraph writing achievement between the students who were taught by using Natural Approach and those who were not (the mean score of the post-test of the experimental group was higher than the control group (15.240 > 12.180) and the significance value was 0.000 (p-value<0.05)). Therefore, the results of the study indicated that Natural Approach is effective to improve the students’ descriptive paragraph writing achievement.
