Abstract
The research was carried out in Lahat district, South Sumatera from January until October 2002, with objective to analyze community structure of predatory arthropods, to analyze the community similarities among those inhabiting the paddy ecosystems, and to evaluate the potential of the predator as biocontrol agent for planthopper. The predators were sampled using pitfall traps. The result indicated that carabid beetles and lycosid spiders had the highest relative abundance compared to other arthropod predators. The beetles, Pheropsophus spp. and the lycosid spider, Pardosa pseudoannulata dominated the paddy ecosystems. The most important planthopper predator was P. pseudoannulata that frequently consumed 3 up to 4 the planthopper adults or nymphs per day. Species diversity of the arthropod predators inhabiting paddy field near the coffee plantation and field bunds was higher than those on other fields. Similarity indices of predatory community between paddy field near the plantation and forest were higher than those on paddy field near other simple ecosystems. The complex ecosystems, such as the plantation and the forest, could functioned as sources of predators between two paddy growing seasons.
