Abstract

Background: Dementia is an umbrella term for several diseases affecting memory, other cognitive abilities and behaviour that interfere significantly with a person’s ability to maintain their activities of daily living. The prevalence of dementia increase in relation with the increasing life expectancy of people. It is estimated that up to 97% of dementia patients eventually develop Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD), where symptoms affect patient's behaviour, mood, and perception of patients. Previous research concerning this failed to produce conclusive results, and there are no available data about the usage of these drugs on dementia patients in Palembang. This research aims to provide data about antidepressant and mood stabilizer usage on dementia patients in RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Methods: This research is a descriptive observational study, using secondary data from medical records. The sample for this research are medical records of dementia patients that undergoes treatment in both inpatient and outpatient service in RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin within January 2014-December 2018 that fulfilled inclusion and exclusion criterias by using total sampling technique. Results: Out of 75 dementia patients in RSUP DR. Mohammad Hoesin, there were 18 patients who got antidepressant and/or mood stabilizer medication. Majority consist of male patients (55,6%) between 55-74 years old (50%) with vascular dementia (61,1%). Fluoxetine (44,4%), Amitriptyline (27,9%), Sertaline (11,1%), Carbamazepine (11,1%), and Maprotiline (5,5%) are the antidepressants and mood stabilizers that was found to be administered to 18 of those dementia patients. Conclusions: Some dementia patients in RSUP DR. Mohammad Hoesin were given antidepressant and mood stabilizer pharmacoterapy as a way to manage behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia.
