Abstract

Retinoblastoma is the most common intraocular malignant tumor occurring in childhood, in which around 90% of cases are diagnosed before the age of 3 years. Worldwide, around 8,000 children are found to have retinoblastoma each year with 80% found in Asia and Africa. Retinoblastoma occurs when there is a genetic mutation on chromosome 13, called the Rb1 gene. It is suspected that one of the factors that influence this genetic mutation is parental age, namely the age of the mother and father on the day of the child's birth. Research was to determine the relationship between parental age dan retinoblastoma cases in the Ophthalmology Departement of Dr. Muhammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang. Observational analytic study with case series design. This study uses secondary data obtained from medical records. The sampling technique used is total sampling. Data were analyzed using Chi Square and Mann Whitney method. Total sample size was 60 patients with retinoblastoma. The majority of research subjects were male (63.34%), aged 1-5 years (73.34%), had a father aged 31-40 years (58.33%), mothers aged 31-40 years (48,33%), had moderate malnutrition (100%), had no family history of retinoblastoma (100%), and had stage II retinoblastoma (23.33%). There was a relationship between father and mother's age and the incidence of retinoblastoma (p = 0.043 and p = 0.008).
