Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chonic metabolic disease characterized by hyperglicemia due to the impairment of insulin secretion and/or insulin action. DM is one of the non-communicable diseases which is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality. The incidence of DM can be influenced by several risk factors which consist of modifable and non-modifable factors. This study was aimed to describe the risk factors in patients with Type 2 DM at Puskesmas Merdeka Palembang.This study was an observational descriptive study with a cross sectional design, conducted at Puskesmas Merdeka Palembang in September to October 2019. The population in this study was all Type 2 DM outpatients at Puskesmas Merdeka Palembang. Data obtained from medical records and direct interviews with patients. Collected data was processed using SPSS version 25. Based on sociodemographic factors, the majority of Type 2 DM patients in Puskesmas Merdeka Palembang were aged 60-69 years (45,3%), female (69,2%), unemployed (47,2%) and high school graduates (49,1%). Most of Type 2 DM patients had a family history of DM (60,4%), had no history of smoking (71,7%), had no history of alcohol consumption (98,1%), and had a history of hypertension (62,3%). Based on anthropometric status, the majority of patients had normal body mass index (60,4%) and central obesity according to waist circumference and waist to hip ratio (79,2% and 83%). Central obesity was a dominant risk factor of Type 2 DM in Puskesmas Merdeka Palembang.
