Abstract
Background: Empathy has an important role in medicine, especially in doctor-patient interactions. Several studies have suggested that medical students become less empathetic during their training. This study discusses the factors that influence the empathy of medical students towards patients during their professional education. Method: This research was a qualitative descriptive study. Data were obtained from medical professional education students by using written interviews and focus group discussion (FGD). Results: Out of 191 students that took part in written interviews and 28 that took part in FGD, there were three main factors that influenced the empathy of medical students towards patients: 1) Students factors: knowledge about the importance of empathy, direct experience, personality, motivation, mood (emotion), and personal experience; 2) Patient and patient family factors: patient’s attitudes, patient’s family’s attitudes, socioeconomic status of the patient, type and severity of the patient's illness; and 3) Surrounding environmental factors: burnout, satisfaction or appreciation in job, work environment, and role models. Conclusion: Many factors influenced medical students’ empathy change towards patients. Keywords: Empathy, medical students, qualitative research
