Abstract

Flight safety is one of the research of K3 (Occupational Safety and Health) in aviation that emphasizes in hazard identification and K3 risks in aviation workers under the condition of the fulfillment of safety requirements in the utilization of airfield, airplanes, and flight navigation. One of the issues in flight sector is accidents that are caused by human error. This may happen due to the lack of safety awareness in aviation workers that put them in risk, another factor might be their own physical and mental health. Pilots contribute the most of the human error compared to other workers, because pilots are first line of safety in aviation who are responsible in identifying and correcting errors before the accident happens. This study aims to investigate the workload during the phase of flight in pilot’s safety performance in Bandar Udara Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Palembang (Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Palembang Airport) using NASA-TLX and interview method. Sample in this study is comprised of 6 (six) informants there are 2 (two) persons as a key informan and 4 (four) persons as an oridnary informan. The result of this study shows that the mental workload of pilots is classified as very high at 82.78 under the NASA-TLX average score, mental wellbeing becomes the largest indicator that impacts the mental workload with an average of 334,16 and a percentage of 26%. The conclusion is the overload mental workload on pilots can decrease pilot’s safety performance. Mental workload increases the most during crucial phases, which are takeoff and landing. Safety performance as a main concern in aviation. Preflight procedure most important things to do for the safety aviation.
