Abstract

Early breastfeeding initiation is an effort to increase the success of exclusive breastfeeding and reduce the risk of neonatal death by 22%. In 2013, UNICEF reported that the proportion of IMD in Indonesia (34.5%) was still below that of Myanmar (76%), Philippines (54%) and Thailand (50%). The percentage of babies who had an IMD chance in South Sumatra Province was 62.26% and the Neonatal Mortality Rate reached 540 cases. The purpose of this study was to determine factors related to the implementation of IMD. This study uses a cross sectional study design with predictive factor models. The population of this study is all mothers who have children aged ≤18 months in the work area of Kerinjing Health center. The number of samples 124 respondents. Sampling using cluster ramdom sampling technique. The results showed that 64.5% of respondents did IMD. Bivariate analysis shows factors related to the implementation of early breastfeeding, namely ANC visit (p-value 0.007), knowledge (p-value 0.008), attitude (p-value <0.001), delivery method (p-value 0.007), family support ( pvalue <0.001), support of health workers (p-value <0.001). The results of multivariate analysis showed that the most dominant factor was the delivery method (p-value= 0,015, PR= 25,362, 95% CI= 1,858-34,231). Utilizing the ANC visit service as a place to consult and convey information about early breastfeeding initiation is one of the efforts to increase the coverage of IMD.
