Abstract

Dentine hypersensitivity is a condition characterized as a short, sharp pain from exposed dentine in response to tactile, thermal, and chemical stimulus. One of hypersensitivity dentine treatment is by applying desensitizing agent such as hydroxyapatite. Hydroxyapatite can be synthesized from natural materials such as fish bones. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of hydroxyapatite from bone waste of tilapia fish (Oreochromis niloticus) as desensitizing agent on dentinal tubule occlusion. Twelve dentine samples from premolars were sectioned transversally on the occlusal area near dentino enamel junction. Dentine samples were divided into 2 groups and etched with 6% citric acid to open dentine tubule. Occluded dentinal tubule were evaluated and counted by measuring microstructure microscope as pretest group, followed by application of 25% hydroxyapatite solution (Group A) and aquadest (Group B). Occluded tubule dentine were evaluated and counted for posttest. Data statistical analysis was done using paired t t-test and independent t-test. Mean difference from dentinal tubule occlusion pretest and posttest in group A was 54,77± 5,71 and 6,28±4,91 in group B. There was a significant mean difference on dentinal tubule occlusion between those groups. The conclusion of this study was the application of hydroxyapatite solution 25% from bone waste of the tilapia fish (Oreochromis niloticus) as desensitizing agent is effective to occlude dentinal tubule.
