Abstract

Ethanolic 96% extract of red betel (Piper crocatum Ruiz & Pav.) is classified as non toxic based on the previous general toxicity test researches including acute and subchronic toxicity test with LD50 18 g/kgBW. The purpose of doing teratogenicity test is to know the effect of a sample towards the fetuses if being consumed by a pregnant woman. The ethanolic 96% extract of red betel’s dosages that were given are 50, 100, dan 200 mg/kgBW. The extract was given to the pregnant mice during the organogenesis period by the 9th until 17th day of pregnancy. On the 18th day, the pregnant mice was dissected to observe the fetuses’ weight, the amount of living fetuses, dead fetuses, implantation, resorption, the external abnormality of the fetuses, and the fetuses’ skeletal disorder. The data that has been statistically analyzed by ANOVA showed that the adduction of extract has a significant effect of the ossification delayed of interparietal bones and sacrocaudal vertebra curved bones (F counted > F table 0.05) and a very significant effect of the ossification delayed of sternum bones (asymetrically shaped) (F counted > F table 0.01). The DMRT (Duncan Multiple Range Test) showed that P2 dosage (100 mg/kgBW) was the minimum dosage that could result in the teratogenic effect on mice’s fetuses, so it can be concluded that ethanolic 96% extract of red betel has a teratogenic effect on mice’s (Mus musculus) fetuses.
