Abstract

The title of this research is “The Impact of May 1998 Riots Toward The Life of Ethnic Chinese in Palembang City in 1998-2003”. the Issue raised is the impact of May 1998 riots toward the life of ethnic Chinese in Palembang city. The aims of this research were to describe the beginning of ethnic Chinese moved to Palembang, describe the life of ethnic Chinese toward May 1998 riot and negative and positive impacts from May 1998 riots. Method used in this research was Historical method. The technique of collecting the data used interview, literature review by searching source by visiting some libraries, such as UNSRI central library, South Sumatra Provincial Library, Reading Room Library FKIP Sriwijaya University and documentation. Based of the result of the research, it can be concluded that May 1998 riots gives positive impacts. It was the incipience of Reformation era as the result deposing President Soeharto and the end of the New Order. It was the opportunity to arrange peace lives between local people and Chinese Indonesians as Indonesian citizens in reformation era. Whereas the negative impact were; in May 1998 riots, there were burning, destruction, looting of shops, warehouses, and private banks whose shareholders are also of Chinese descent and there was even a bloody tragedy due to persecution and rape. The social impact perceived by ethnic Chinese was that the tragedy was causing psychological trauma for people of Chinese descent who had been the victims of riots in Palembang city.
