Abstract

Smartphones are advanced technologies that function to interact with other people. The use of smartphones certainly has a positive and negative impact on its users. The use of smartphones that are too frequent or excessive will have a negative impact on health, especially vision. The 2013 Basic Health Research showed that the proportion of users of glasses or contact lenses in the population over the age of 6 years in Indonesia was 4.6%, the proportion of vision reduction was 0.9%, and the proportion of blindness was 0.4%. This can occur due to the use of gadgets with unsafe actions. This study aims to study the relationship between unsafe actions in the use of smartphones on visual acuity in students at SMA Pembina Palembang in 2019. This research is a quantitative study with a cross sectional design. The location of the research at Palembang Pembina High School. The study population was students of class X and XI Palembang Pembina High School. The sampling technique is simple random sampling technique. Data analysis used univariate and bivariate analysis (Chi-square test). The results of the bivariate analysis showed that there was a relationship between the position of smartphone use (p-value = 0.042) and the distance of smartphone use (p-value = 0,000) for visual acuity, while there was no relationship between brightness (lighting on a smartphone screen) (p-value = 1,000) for visual acuity. It can be concluded that there is a relationship between the position and distance of the use of a smartphone to the visual acuity and there is no relationship between brightness (lighting on a smartphone screen) to the visual acuity. It is expected that teenagers take safe actions when using a smart phone, taking vitamin A, and also get approval to increase knowledge about how to improve eye health.
