Abstract

This study discussed the representation of poverty in Andrea Hirata's Laskar Pelangi novel, poverty found includes material poverty, income poverty, and social poverty. This classification of poverty representation used theories from Piven, Cloward, and Swanson. This study aimed to described the representation of poverty and the representation models contained in the novel Laskar Pelangi by Andrea Hirata and described the implications in the study of literature in high school. This research used descriptive qualitative method, literature sociology approach, and data collection techniques in the form of documentation techniques. Representation of poverty contained in the novel Laskar Pelangi by Andrea Hirata, namely (1) material poverty which includes limited clothing, limited food, and limited board. (2) Income poverty which includes lack of income to meet family needs. (3) Social poverty which includes social discrimination, inability to adapt and change lives for the better, and limited education. The representation model used in the Laskar Pelangi novel is an active model. Key words: representation, novel, implications of literary learning
