Abstract

Research of Rikesdas (2013) was reported South Sumatra is the third highest in Indonesia with the percentage of households that has a family member which has been put on a restrainted at 14.4 %. Beside it, Ogan Ilir Regency is the 7th rank in South Sumatra Province with 24 people that has been restrainted. This study was aim to find out family support to restrainting people with mental disorders in Ogan Ilir Regency. This study was used descriptive qualitative research. The sample taking of the research location and the selection of the expert key informan were conducted by using purposive sampling. The number of key informants was 5 patient’s family respondents, the number of the expert key informants was 6 health officers respondents and also 6 village stakeholders respondents was taken. The data validity was used triangulation techniques which are data triangulation, sources triangulation and methods triangulation. The next step was the data analyzed with content analysis. The results of this study indicate that family understanding in handling patients with mental disorders (ODGJ) was still lacking. There are not special beliefs and norms in society. There are opposition towards restraint. Some opinions said ODGJ caused by genetics and witchcraft. Health facilitation just through medical and alternative. The restraint tools are gotten by buying, self-made or previously available. Emotional support in the form of care, feed, and treatment. Informative support in the form of advice to remain patient, seek medical treatment and alternatives, positive thinking and accepting reality as a fate. The conclution of this study is lack of support the handling of the ODGJ patients in the community caused an unoptimal treatment for ODGJ patients and also disruption and threats to public safety. So that the impact of the restraint behavior is still carried out by the community. The suggetions to Ogan Ilir District Health Office can increase socialization and education and do the collaboration of all levels in society.
