Abstract
A research at Beringin Makmur II and its surrounding areas, Musi Rawas Utara, South Sumatra, is conducted to identify morphological conditions, stratigraphy, geological structures, and also to reconstruct geological history that formed the area as it is today. Research methods used are literature studies, field observations, laboratory and studio analyses, map and geological models. The study area is divided into two main geomorphic units, namely low undulating hills (DL) and strong undulating hills (DK), and also an anthropogenic unit of open-pit coal mine. Stratigraphy is divided into three rock units: claystones, sandstones, and siltstones of Muaraenim Formation which are formed in land environment. The geological structures that developed in the study area consisted of north-south anticline-syncline folds with low-dip slopes. Coal of Muaraenim formation in the study area was analysed and compared with coal of other region, Tanjungenim, to classify the characteristics and attributes of the coal cleats; such as Aperture, Spacing, Orientation, and Cleat Intensity. Cleat attribute data was obtained through scanline measurements of coal seam outcrop at open pit mines. The analysis utilizes the geostatistical methods, specifically descriptive statistics. Comparisons of cleats in the study area with raw data of Tanjungenim resulted in attributes data frequency and distribution pattern as well as the effect of data treatment in the form of normalization and classification based on cleats, face cleats and butt cleats, on the analysis. The result of aperture and spacing of cleats analysis in Beringin Makmur II shows cleats that are evenly distributed at smaller or denser unit values. In contrast, Tanjungenim cleats shows data distribution that tends to be uneven or asymmetric with data piled on certain values. Interpretation of the results indicates differences between data, where cleats distribution of Beringin Makmur II is better and ideal than Tanjungenim cleat. Based on its geological history, the study area was formed by Tertiary sedimentation process. Sedimentation began with claystone formed as base layer followed by coal formation during Middle Miocene. Subsequently, clay and sandstone intercalation was formed, with siltstone at the top during Miocene - Early Pliocene. Sedimentation is then followed by the compressional phase and regression of the South Sumatra basin during Pliocene - Pleistocene. In this phase a series of folds was formed with anticline-syncline, then erodes over time to become what it is today. Keywords: Cleat, Geostatistic, Coal, South Sumatra
