Abstract

Periodic data retrieval from broad perspective is needed now especially in civil and military aspects. The most appropriate method is to use an air vehicle. An air vehicle is generally called Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) or a plane without the crewman (drone). UAV is divided into two categories that is Fixed Wing, and Rotary Wing. Therefore, an air vehicle is designed with the ability to take off and land without requiring a large area, and has a wide flying range. The air vehicle is called Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). The method used in this research begins with system designing, the making process, and the system calibration. The analysis is done when the air vehicle flies, if the air vehicle does not fly, then the research will return to the system designing step. The result of this research is VTOL that is designed can successfully fly. VTOL can fly using two modes, that is the drone mode, and the fixed wing mode. Each component that is used in VTOL works normal according to the condition or mode used. VTOL with drone mode works well 100%, while VTOL with fixed wing mode does not work well due to the motor servo used in VTOL has only 1500 PWM, thus making the motor position at an angle of 45 degrees. The PWM of four motors during the transition from drone mode to fixed wing mode varies. The motor 1 PWM is 1750, motor 2 is 1940, motor 3 is 1850, and motor 4 is 1950. When the transition returns from fixed wing mode to drone mode, the four motors have the same PWM value, that is 1118.
