Abstract

Peatland is one of the multi-function ecosystems as a protector of hydrological functions, sources of biodiversity, food and energy and global climate control. Peatlands continue to be degraded from time to time. One of the main causes of peatland forest degradation is due to fires. Peat fires are the most dangerous type of fire compared to other types of forest fires that are difficult to detect and control. Fires in peat soil penetrate beneath the soil layer and form funnel holes, then fire spread below the surface horizontally. Though the physical nature of the soil is an important factor affecting the ability of the soil to process including the decomposition process. So, the purpose of this research is to compare the impact of fire on some physical characteristics of peat soils to analyze the physical properties that have changed due to fire. This study was conducted in 2019 at the Sriwijaya botanical garden, and analysis ware carried out in the Soil Science laboratory, Sriwijaya University.
