Abstract

Aphis gossypii is one of the pests of chili plants in Indonesia, the damage caused by this aphid reaches 25%. In addition to causing damage, A. gossypii is a virus vector and aphids can carry 76 diseases caused by viruses. Aphids include polyphagic pests. To avoid loss of production, pest control on plants is carried out. Several environmentally friendly plant pest control technologies (OPT) have been found such as the use of resistant varieties, natural enemies, botanical pesticides, and biological agents. Entomopathogenic fungi are one type of biological agents capable of infecting insects. Some of the entomopathogenic fungi that can infect A. gossypii include: Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae, Verticillium lecanii and Paecilomyces fumosoroceus, Neozygites fresenii. Bioinsecticides containing entomopathogenic fungi need to be packaged properly to avoid contamination and the mortality of entomopathogenic fungal spores by external factors, one example of these external factors is sunlight. The aim of this research is to observe the effect of plastic packaging that stores bioinecsticides on the ability of bioinsecticides to kill test insects. This research was conducted at the Entomology Laboratory, Department of Pests and Plant Diseases, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. Preparation of the study began from August 2019 until November 2019. Biological tests on test insects were carried out in November 2019 until March 2020. This study used a Randomized Block Design (RCBD) using two Beauveria bassiana isolates (BKBTP and BSWTD4) and two Metarhizium anisopliae isolates (MSWTP1 and MSWTP3). The treatment of each bioinsecticide that was packed in plastic packaging was repeated 3 times. The results showed that bioinsecticides from the four isolates that were packaged in several plastic containers had conidia density that were not significantly different. BKBTP isolate stored in PET plastic packaging has the highest conidia density, while BKBTP isolate stored in PET+Plastic plastic packaging has the lowest conidia density. The BSWTD4 isolate stored in Aluminum (others) plastic packaging has the highest conidia viability for 1x24 hours duration, while MSWTP3 isolate stored in Paper (others) plastics packaging has the lowest conidia viability for 1x24 hours duration. The BKBTP isolate stored in HDPE plastic packaging has the highest conidia viability for 2x24 hours duration, while MSWTP3 isolate stored in PET+plastic plastic packaging has the lowest conidia viability for 2x24 hours duration. The bioinsecticide that caused the highest mortality was BKBTP isolates stored in PET+Plastic plastic packaging, while the bioinsecticide that caused the lowest mortality were found in Paper (others) packaging with MSWTP3 isolates bioinsecticides. The symptom of a fungal infection recorded during this study research includes the shrinking of A. gossypii body compared to healthy aphids. Another symptom is that the body of A. gossypii is stiff and hard. The conclusion of this research is that the two best packaging material to store bioinsecticides with entomopathogenic fungi as active ingredient are PET + plastic and HDPE.
