Abstract

Staphylococcus aureus were one of the microbials that often found on the denture surface of denture stomatitis patients. It can be prevented by using denture cleanser. Gynura pseudochina was herbal plant that is often used in Indonesia and known to have bioactive properties as antibacterial. This study aims to see the effectiveness of Gynura pseudochina extract in five concentrations (5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%) on the growth of S.aureus bacteria on heat cured acrylic resin plates. Thirty five heat cured acrylic plates (10x10x1mm) were contaminated with S.aureus bacteria, divided into 7 groups (n=5). The samples were immersed in one of these solution: G.pseudochina extract, sodium hypolorite, and aquadest for 30 minutes. The sample was transferred to 0.9% NaCl solution then 0.1ml of the solution was taken, cultured on PCA media and incubated for 24 hours. The number of S.aureus colonies that grew was counted using a colony counter. Data were analyzed with one way ANOVA and followed by Post Hoc Games-Howell. There were significant difference in almost all groups (p<0.05) except between the 5% to 10% extract treatment group and the 5%, 10% extract to the negative control (aquadest) (p>0.05). The conclusion of this study were G.pseudochina extract 15%, 20% and 25% are effective in inhibiting the growth of S.aureus bacteria colonies on heat cured acrylic plates and the 25% concentration was the most effective concentration.
