Abstract

Mouthwash is a solution that works to reduce the number of microbial in the oral cavity, prevent periodontal diseas and halitosis as well as dental health problem. Kersen leaf (Muntingia calabura L.) are natural agent that have potential to be used as a mouthwash because they contains antibacterial agent. Kersen leaf contains active compounds such as flavonoid, saponin, and tannin which show significant antibacterial activity. Objective: This study aims to determine the antibacterial potency of Kersen leaf (Muntingia calabura L.) extract mouthwash against Streptococcus mutans. Material and method: This study was a quasi-experimental using post-test only control group design with 4 groups of test materials consisting Kersen leaf extract mouthwash with concentrations of 5%, 10%, 25%, 50% and aquadest as controls with 4 repetitions. Antibacterial potency was tested with a diffusion method (Kirby-Bauer) in blood agar media. All groups were assessed after 24 hours of incubation period at 37°C. The diameter of inhibition zone was measured with a sliding caliper and data were analyzed using One Way ANOVA test and Post Hoc Tukey test. Result: The result showed that there were significant differences in the antibacterial potency of Kersen (Muntingia calabura L.) leaf extract mouthwash against Streptococcus mutans bacteria amongst all concentration except in the concentration groups of 5%. Conclusion: Based on the result of this study, it can be concluded that the Kersen leaf extract mouthwash has antibacterial potency against Streptococcus mutans starting from concentration 10%.
