Abstract

Cataracts are the main cause of blindness and vision problems globally, especially in developing countries (WHO, 2019). Most cataracts are caused by age-related degeneration. As life expectancy in Indonesia increases, the incidence of cataracts also increases. Phacoemulsification is an effective surgical technique for cataracts due to its fast visual healing and low complication rate. This study aims to identify the recovery time of post-phacoemulsification visual acuity in patients at the Eye Hospital, South Sumatra Province. In this study a cross-sectional-descriptive observational study design was applied. The sample in this study was all post-phacoemulsification patient medical records at the Eye Hospital of South Sumatra Province in 2019 that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The variables observed were demographic characteristics (age and sex), and post-phacoemulsification visual acuity recovery time on the first day, the first week, week 4, and week 7. Of the 1,398 post-phacoemulsification patients, 160 patients met the criteria. Data were analyzed by univariate and presented descriptively in the form of frequency distribution tables and narative. The majority (75%) were in the >50 years age group, 51.9% of male and 48.1% female patients. The greatest recovery in visual acuity (6/6-6/18) was at week 7 (60.6%); week 4 (27.5%); first week (11.3%); and the first day (0.6%). Most of the phacoemulsification patients were in the elderly with the proportion of male and female relatively the same. The best visual acuity recovery time was at week 7.
