Abstract

Background: The prevalence of allergic rhinitis in Indonesia reaches 40% in children and 10-30% in adults. Usually this disease will appear in adolescents or young adults and 80% of cases develop by the age of 20 years. This disease is not a deadly disease but it will interfere the life quality of the sufferers. Early and appropriate intervention such as avoidance of allergens is expected to improve the life quality of the sufferers. Several standard instruments have been developed to assess the incidence of allergic rhinitis in the population, one of which is the Score for Allergic Rhinitis (SFAR) assessment. This study aims to determine the description of medical student in Sriwijaya University class of 2017-2019 who are suspected of having allergic rhinitis based on the SFAR assessment. Methods: This type of research is descriptive observational with cross sectional design. Data collection used the SFAR questionnaire which was distributed online via google form. The research subjects were medical student in Sriwijaya University class of 2017-2019. Results: The research subjects were 598 people, there were 46.3% of students who were suspected of having allergic pioneering based on the SFAR assessment. The percentage of males was 47.5% while females were 45.8% and the frequency of age ≥20 years was 62.8% of students. The most frequent clinical symptom was sneezing 95.7%. House dust/house dust mites was assumed to be the most trigger factor at 94.6%. While 35% of the subjects had a history of previous allergies and a family history of allergies of 59.6%. Conclusion: The study subjects who were suspected of having allergic rhinitis based on the SFAR assessment were more often found in male students aged ≥20 years. Sneezing is the most frequent clinical symptom and house dust is thought to be the most trigger factor. Keywords: Rhinitis Allergic, Score for Allergic Rhinitis, Medical Students
