Abstract

Background: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is the most common head and neck carcinoma which was the most common squamous cell carcinoma type. The etiology of nasopharyngeal carcinoma is multifactorial. Some researches has proved that salted fish contains a carcinogenic substance, such as nitrosamine, which can activate latent EBV at nasopharyngeal epithelium. This research aims to know the association between salted fish consumption and nasopharyngeal carcinoma at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Method: This research is an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design. The sample was taken by total sampling method from head and neck cancer patient's medical record at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang from January to December 2019. Result: Salted fish consumption and nasopharyngeal carcinoma incidence show significant association with p value=0.001 (p<0.05). Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is the most common head, and neck carcinoma at otolaryngology-head and neck department in RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang about 45 cases (77.6%) with age 40-49 about 13 cases (31.3%), most patients are men about 29 cases (64.4%) and graduated from secondary school about 19 cases (42.4%). There is a significant association between nasopharyngeal carcinoma and salted fish consumption history (p value = 0,001), salted fish consumption more than 3 times a month (p value = 0,049), and routine consumption of salted fish (p value = 0,028 ). There is no significant association between nasopharyngeal carcinoma and salted fish consumption more than 15 grams every meal (p value = 0,275 ) and salted fish consumption more than 10 years (p value = 1,000 ). Conclusion: There is an association between salted fish consumption and nasopharyngeal incidence at otolaryngeal-head and neck department in RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Keywords: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma, salted fish, head and neck cancer
