Abstract

ABSTRACT THE EFFECT OF SUN EXPOSSURE ON THE FREQUENCY OF INFLUENZA INCIDENCES IN STUDENTS OF SMAN 11 PALEMBANG ((Muhammad Rizky, Desember 2020, 95 halaman) Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Sriwijaya Background. Sunlight produces ultraviolet B radiation that plays a role in the synthesis of vitamin D in the body. Vitamin D is known to have benefits in the process of calcium synthesis in bones and has an immunomodulation effect on immune cells that reduces the risk of infectious diseases like influenza. Method. From 150 samples, 94 samples were used in this study. An observational analytic study with cross-sectional design using primary data from 94 samples of SMAN 11 Palembang students by collecting data through an online questionnaire. Samples are categorized as sufficiently exposed to sunlight if exposed at 10:00 - 15:00 for at least 15 minutes with the body parts exposed at least to the face, arms and legs (46%). The sample is categorized as frequent (often) flu if it has flu ≥ 2 times in the last 3 months. Result. Based on the percentage of flu frequency, participants that sunbathing below 10:00 had a percentage of 81.8%, while those who sunbathing above 10:00 have a percentage of 58.8%. Participants who sunbathing <15 minutes have a higher percentage (81%) than participants who sunbathing ≥ 15 minutes (71%). Participants whose body was exposed <46% had a percentage of 81.3%, while those exposed to ≥ 46% had a percentage of 75.8%. Conclusion. There was an effect of the adequacy of sun exposure, duration, and body area exposed to the frequency of experiencing flu in the last 3 months, but there was no significant relationship (p> 0.05). There is a significant influence and relationship between sunbathing time and the frequency of experiencing flu (p = 0.039).
