Abstract

Background: Respiratory distress is one of the causes for newborns to be treated in a neonatal intensive care unit. Respiratory distress can have some serious consequences for babies such as respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, and even death. About 7% of newborns often experience respiratory problems. Most cases of respiratory problems in newborns are found in infants with a history of preterm birth (<37 weeks). However, in some cases, term babies with a history of delivery by elective caesarean section may also be admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit. Methods: This study is an analytic observational study with are search design case control. This study looked at the medical records of neonates diagnosed with resporatory distress as a sample of cases and medical records of healthy babies as a control sample at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospotal Palembang for the period 2019. Results: There were 105 babies diagnosed with respiratory distress and 105 babies who were born healthy. This study showed the incidence of respiratory distress in neonates was associated with gestational age <37 weeks (p value <0.001), mode of delivery by sectio caesarean (p value <0.001), history of maternal hypertension (p value <0.001), baby with male sex (p value 0.027) and low birth weight (p value <0.001). Conclusion: The most dominant risk factor affecting the incidence of neonatal respiratory distress is a history of maternal hypertension. Key words: Risk factors, respiratory distress, neonates.
