Abstract
Introduction. Research on honey has proven the benefits of honey’s antibacterial. The antimicrobial potential each honey can vary. Escherichia coli is a harmless Gram negative bacterium, however some strains can be pathogenic. Antibiotic resistance to Escherichia coli is increasing rapidly so it is necessary to find alternative antibacterials. Tembesu bitter black honey is honey from Tembesu tree’s hives at Musi Banyuasin. This study aims to determine the in vitro effectiveness of tembesu bitter black honey's antibacterial against Escherichia coli.. Method. This study was an experimental in vitro study with a posttest only control group. Inhibition zones performed by well diffusion method. The antibacterial effect of Tembesu bitter black honey (MHPT) concentrations of 25%, 50%, and 100% were compared with negative control (aquades) and positive control (ciprofloxacin). Mann whitney and Independent t test analysis was done. Results. The mean inhibition zones of the negative control (aquades); MHPT 25%; 50%; 100%; and ciprofloxacin is 0; 0; 13.4; 24.8; 26.8. There is a difference inhibition zone of the tembesu bitter black honey against Escherichia coli between negative control (aquades) with MHPT 50% (p = 0.005), MHPT 100% (p = 0.005), and positive control ciprofloxacin (p = 0.005) and there is not a difference inhibition zone between negative control (aquades) with MHPT 25% (p = 1,000) and between MHPT 100% with ciprofloxacin (p = 0.139). Conclusion. Tembesu bitter black honey 50% and 100% of concentration effective as an antibacterial against Escherichia coli. The Escherichia coli’s growth inhibition effect of 100% concentration of tembesu bitter black honey is similar with ciprofloxacin.
