Abstract

Endodontic treatment failure can be caused by Enterococcus faecalis. The natural resource such as ambon banana (Musa paradisiaca var. sapientum) peel can be used to inhibit the growth of Gram-positive bacteria. Ambon banana (Musa paradisiaca var. sapientum) peel has antibacterial properties because it contains active compounds, such as flavonoid, tannin, saponin, and terpenoid. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial effect of ambon banana (Musa paradisiaca var. sapientum) peel extract against Enterococcus faecalis. This study method was quasi-experimental consisting of five groups, such as ambon banana peel extract 10%, 20%, 40% concentration, 2% chlorhexidine as a positive control, and distilled water as a negative control. The antibacterial effect was tested by using well diffusion method with Mueller Hinton Agar. The test repeated six times for each group. The media was incubated for 24 hours at 37⁰C. After 24 hours, the diameter of the inhibition zone was measured by a sliding caliper in millimeter. Data were analyzed by using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney test. The result showed that there were significant differences between all groups (p<0.05). All of the concentrations of ambon banana (Musa paradisiaca var. sapientum) peel extract showed an inhibition zone. The greatest diameter of the inhibition zone was 9.31 mm at concentration of 40% but still smaller than 2% chlorhexidine. The conclusion was ambon banana (Musa paradisiaca var. sapientum) peel extract could inhibit the growth of Enterococcus faecalis with the greatest diameter of the inhibiti on zone at concentration of 40%. Keywords: Antibacterial, Enterococcus faecalis, Musa paradisiaca var. sapientum
