Abstract

Background. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is one of the upper extremity disorders caused by the narrowing and compression of carpal tunnel in the wrist. One of the risk factors of CTS is obesity. Obesity (BMI >25kg/m2) is associated with the reduction in nerve conduction velocity in CTS patients. Therefore, this study aimed to know the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and nerve conduction velocity in CTS patients at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Method. This descriptive study with case series design was conducted at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang in November 2017. Sample in this study were CTS patients at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang that fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were taken from the medical records and analyzed by Pearson correlation test using SPSS version 24. Results. This study obtained 43 CTS patients who fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria. There was a significant correlation between BMI with the amplitude of sensory nerve velocity (p=0.002) with moderate positive correlation (r=0.0458) Conclusion. There was a significant correlation between body mass index and nerve conduction velocity in CTS patients.
