Abstract

Background: Infection control in dentistry is important to prevent infection transmission among patients, dental and oral health workers, and environment. Dental and oral health workers such as clinical students are at risk of exposure to infection, which is the reason why clinical students have to know about infection control before working in dental settings. Knowledge of infection control should be integrated and applied, when clinical students work with patients. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of knowledge about infections control associated with the length of study time in working as clinical students of Bagian Kedokteran Gigi dan Mulut (BKGM), Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sriwijaya. Method: This research is an analytical observational with a cross-sectional approach design that involves 230 clinical students of BKGM, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sriwijaya. Only 166 (72.2%) respondents who fill the questionnaire completely. Knowledge of dental infection control was measured using an online questionnaire consisting of 35 open and closed questions that were filled in via google form for 2 weeks. The obtained data were analyzed using the chi square test. Results: 69.3% of study respondents had a good level of knowledge about dental infection control. Chi square test results obtained p value = 0.605 (significant if p <0.05). Conclusion: There is no significant relationship between level of infection control knowledge and time of studies of BKGM Universitas Sriwiwjya’ clinical students.
