Abstract

Introduction: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a primary liver malignancy originating from hepatocyte cells. pain is one of the symptoms that affect the quality of life of patients. To maintain the quality of life for HCC patients, patients need to receive pain management medication. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) recommends morphine as the drug of the initial choice. This study aims to determine the pattern of giving Morphine to HCC patients at Mohammad Hoesin Hospital, Palembang. Methods: This research is a total sampling descriptive study from medical records at Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang from 1st January 2019 – 1st January 2020. There were 119 medical record data that met the inclusion criteria. Result: The prevalence of morphine use was 14.29% with the highest prevalence found in men (12.6%), age 18-40 years (5.9%), and history of HBV infection (9.2%). The highest use of morphine in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma was morphine with a dose of <12 mg/day (70.56%), frequency of administration 2 times/day (70.59%), and duration of administration> 1 week (58.8%). Characteristics of Hepatocellular Carcinoma patients are mostly male (71.4%), age group 40-60 years (55.5%), and work as farmers (20.2%). The drug interactions that occurred most were synergistic interactions (14.29%). Conclusion: The prevalence of using morphine is quite low in Hepatocellular Carcinoma patients with the most administration pattern is low dose Morphine which is given with a frequency of twice / day.
