Abstract
The Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) is one of the endemic Sumatran animals protected by Decree of Ministry of Environment and Forestry Number P 106 year 2018 which was an updated regulation of Government Regulation Number 7 of year 1999 concerning protected plant species and protection in Indonesia. Acacia Industrial Forest in the Germplasm Conservation Area, Penyabungan District in Padang Sugihan Landscape is one of the elephant habitats in South Sumatra. Habitat degradation and fragmentation, poaching and conflict pose major threats to elephant populations. Molecular studies have never been carried out on Sumatran Elephant populations in the Ogan Komering Ilir Penyabungan District, South Sumatra. The purpose of this study was to determine the genetic variations from Sumatran Elephant in the Ogan Komering Ilir, Penyabungan District, South Sumatra through in polymorphism and haplotypes data. The results of this study were expected to be the first step in making an elephant genetic database of the sub population pockets in South Sumatra, as well as to be the determinant of the direction of conservation policy for elephants in the region.
