Abstract

Less consumption of fruits and vegetables is one of the ten major risk factors for mortality in the world. One of the reasons for the low consumption of fruit and vegetables in children is the lack of knowledge about the importance of fruit and vegetable consumption. Promotion efforts in increasing the knowledge of fruits and vegetables among children can be done by providing nutrition education using Storytelling method. This study aims to determine the effect of Storytelling method to increase the knowledge of fruits and vegetables in elementary school-age children. This research is a quantitative research using Quasi Experiment research design with non-randomized pretest - posttest with control group design. The samples in this research were elementary school-age children amounts to 60 people selected using purposive sampling technique. The result of paired t-test analysis showed that the average of respondents knowledge in the experimental group before being given intervention 13.20 and 18.97 after intervention. While the result of Wilcoxon analysis in the control group showed that the average of negative rank 11.88 and the average of positive rank 13.80. The result of Mann-Whitney analysis showed that the average of respondents knowledge of experimental group was higher than control group that was 38,43 and control group was 22,57 with p-value (<0,001). Mann-Whitney results showed that there was the difference of knowledge average between experimental and control groups after being given a nutritional education. Suggestion given by this research is should be done further research with bigger respondents to prove effectiveness of storytelling method.
