Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between social comparison and body image on female students. The study hypothesis that there is a relationship between social comparison and appearance evaluation, appearance, orientation, body areas satisfaction, self-classified weight, overweight preoccupation on female student. The population of this study is female students of X University with a an age range from 18-22 years old who have unknown amount students. The research sample was 150 female students from 10 faculties. This study used incidental sampling technique. Body image and social comparison was measured by the scale which refers to the dimensions of body image from Cash (2015) and the dimensions of social comparison from Jones (2001). The result correlation method obtained by value of appearance evaluation (r= -0,419, p= 0,000), appearance orientation (r=0,286, p=0,001), body areas satisfaction (r= -0,389, p=0,000), self-classified weight (r= -0,226, p=0,005), overweight preoccupation (r=0,399, p=0,000). Thus the hypothesis on this study is accepted.
